In recent years various steps were taken at a legislative level within the context of a well-established doctrine aiming at improving the safety procedures and decreasing the risks involved in the area of transport of dangerous goods by road. This article describes the amendments made to several laws, which together with the Transportation Services Law, set out the legal framework for managing emergencies and other incidents that might arise during the transport of dangerous goods. These amendments define significant incidents or accidents of variable levels of severity. Furthermore, they authorize administrative authorities with the task of overseeing the compliance with safety requirements and of operating emergency response plans. The article concludes that it is of utmost importance that managers of carriers and drivers of vehicles are aware of the provisions of the recently adopted legislation in order to be more efficient in case of an accident and more cooperative with the emergency services.
