RoHS and CE Marking – Is there a Connection?

The two European Directives "WEEE" and "RoHS" dealing with the collection and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) and the elimination of certain hazardous substances in EEE have one weakness: Important terms, like for instance the terms "equipment", "put on the market" or "homogeneous material" are not at all or not accurately defined in the directives themselves. This is a reason for misunderstandings and misleading rumours. One of the latest rumours that this article checks is  that the European CE marking symbolizes among other things conformity with the requirements of the RoHS Directive. If this was true every producer of EEE by marking his equipment with the CE symbol from 1 July he would declare that his products are RoHS compliant.
