The EU chemicals policy will undergo drastic changes once the Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) enters into force, probably in 2007. The text of the REACH is not yet finalized. It was originally proposed by the European Commission an 2003 and since then it has been extensively amended. Due to the conflicting interests involved and the extensive lobbying by competing parties, it is expected that further adjustments will be made to the Regulation in the context of the decision making process taking place in the EU. The final text will probably be adopted in autumn of this year and come into force in 2007.This article is based on the current status of the REACH at the time of writing.
