It may be possible that some of the metals used for manufacturing your cellphones, were mined in the Congo by means of slavery and sexual exploitation. In order to fight this phenomenon, manufacturers will be required by US Minerals Conflict Law to trace the sources of their raw materials. This serves as an example of how environmental laws may prove to be powerful tools in implementing moral and social goals. The article reviews the US legislation and similar legislation around the world as REACH PRTR laws on issues of disclosure and information about the use of chemicals.
